After years of near-misses with the parole board and attempts at getting a new trial, a Fort Thomas woman convicted of killing her husband was pardoned Monday by outgoing Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear.

In 2007, Cheryl McCafferty shot and killed her husband, Robert, while he slept. She claimed she was a victim of domestic violence and said that, hours before she killed him, she woke up to a gun brushing her mouth. The gun was in his hand. It was also the same gun she later used to fire the fatal bullet into his head.

Beshear issued 197 pardons and six commutations as his final executive action before leaving office. Among those, Beshear called special attention to 10 women who were "sentenced for violent crimes they committed after suffering years of domestic violence abuse at the hands of their eventual victims."

Jodi Arias, Alexander's ex-girlfriend, was charged with first-degree murder for his death. At trial, she testified that she killed Alexander in self-defense. She was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013. The murder and trial received widespread media attention.

A Texas woman has been executed by lethal injection for torturing and starving a nine-year-old boy to death.
Lisa Ann Coleman, 38, was pronounced at 6.24pm local time last night after her last minute appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected.
She became the second woman to be executed in the United States this year and the 15th since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.
Her execution is said to have passed off "very peacefully" according to media witness KDFW reporter Richard Ray who said he heard only a "short gasp" before she died.
Her last words, were directed at her fellow inmate Darlie Routier, were: "Tell them I finished strong."
Coleman was convicted in 2004 of torturing and starving to death her girlfriend's nine-year-old boy Davontae Williams.
Police found his emaciated body at Coleman's apartment with a disfigured ear, swollen hands and ligature marks on his wrists and ankles.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office tells KPHO they doubt the glasses Arias is selling are even hers, but they can't stop her because they aren't associated with the actual crime.

Arias, a 34-year-old former waitress, was convicted of murder last year in the 2008 killing of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, but jurors couldn't reach a decision on her sentence. Under Arizona law, prosecutors have the option of putting on a second penalty phase with a new jury in an effort to secure a death sentence. That sentencing retrial is scheduled to begin Sept. 29.

If the new jury fails to reach a unanimous decision, the death penalty will be removed as an option. The judge would then sentence Arias to spend her entire life behind bars or be eligible for release after 25 years.

Arias admitted killing Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home, but claimed self-defense. He was stabbed nearly 30 times, had his throat slit and was shot in the head.

Prosecutors argued it was premeditated murder carried out in a jealous rage when Alexander wanted to end their affair.

Sunderland

The 62-year-old, from Sunderland, knew her husband Andrew, now dead, was responsible for a series of sickening attacks on children in the 1970s and 80s, but did nothing to stop him and made no attempt to report what she knew. 

The revelations came to light after Jeffrey was called to give evidence in an ongoing murder trial. 

Called to appear at Newcastle Crown Court against one of the defendants, regarding a prison conversation the pair are alleged to have had, Jeffrey was then quizzed on her relationship with West. 

Joanna Greenberg QC asked Jeffrey: “Your new best friend is Rose West, is it not?” 

Jeffrey replied: “No, she cleans the floor outside, she speaks to me, she speaks to everyone in there.” 

Miss Greenberg said: “The prison service are concerned and made a report about your new friendship with Rose West?” 

Jeffrey said: “I don’t know.” 

Miss Greenberg said: “May I suggest you have something in common, given your ill treatment of children?” 

Jeffrey replied: “No.”
